France Imposes Entry Ban on Israeli Minister Over Settlement Support
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot has announced that France will bar entry to Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich due to his support for the annexation of the West Bank, a Palestinian territory that Israel occupies illegally through the construction of settlements. This decision marks a significant diplomatic stance, as the French government's sanctions also target four Israeli leaders of the settlement movement and 21 settlers.
With this move, France becomes the tenth Western country to impose an entry ban on Smotrich, following similar actions taken by Spain, the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Norway, Slovenia, Ireland, and the Netherlands. These countries previously issued sanctions against another controversial member of the current Israeli government, National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir.
While France has not yet imposed an entry ban on Ben Gvir, it had taken measures against him in late May after footage surfaced showing him walking among activists of the Global Sumud Flotilla in an arrogant manner. The situation escalated on Monday evening, with revelations that Ben Gvir is under investigation by the Rome prosecutors' office for charges of torture and kidnapping. This inquiry follows reports from numerous Flotilla activists who claimed to have suffered severe physical and psychological abuse during their detention in Israel, which concluded with their expulsion.
Both Smotrich and Ben Gvir are noted for their extreme right-wing positions in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government. They are known for their radical and openly racist views, rejecting the existence of the Palestinian people and advocating for the incorporation of both the West Bank and Gaza Strip into a greater Jewish state. As tensions continue to rise in the region, the international community watches closely, considering the implications of such political stances on the peace process.
