International Criminal Court Chief Prosecutor Suspended Amid Sexual Assault Allegations

The Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Karim Khan, has been suspended from his duties with immediate effect due to serious allegations of sexual assault. The ICC's presidency, located in The Hague, announced that a final decision regarding a potential impeachment will be made by the contracting states during a special session that is to convene as soon as possible. These allegations first came to light in 2024 when a close associate accused the British jurist of repeatedly harassing her and forcing her into sexual acts over an extended period. A United Nations commission conducted an investigation into these claims and submitted its report in December 2025, though it has yet to be made public. Additionally, three judges from the ICC provided a legal opinion based on this investigation; however, their findings have also not been disclosed. Karim Khan, aged 56, has been on provisional leave from his position for just over a year, aiming to return once these allegations have been clearly resolved. He has vehemently denied all accusations against him. The political landscape surrounding Khan's tenure has been complicated by his position at the ICC. Since taking on the role of Chief Prosecutor in 2021, he has issued arrest warrants against notable figures, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Particularly, the arrest warrant against Netanyahu has prompted intensified pressure from the United States on the court, leading to sanctions imposed on its staff and judges. It is important to note that, while 125 states have signed the founding treaty of the ICC, the court does not include the USA, Russia, or Israel as members. This status has further complicated international relations and raised questions about the court's autonomy and efficacy in pursuing justice on a global scale. As the ICC moves forward with its special session and deliberations on Khan's future, the implications of these allegations could have lasting effects on the institution's credibility and its ability to uphold international law.
