Israeli Minister Itamar Ben Gvir Under Investigation for Alleged Abuse of Global Sumud Flotilla Activists
The Rome prosecutors' office has initiated an investigation into Israeli Minister of National Security Itamar Ben Gvir regarding the treatment of approximately 430 activists from the Global Sumud Flotilla, which includes at least 27 Italians. These activists were intercepted in international waters between April 28 and 30, and again between May 18 and 19. Ben Gvir faces serious allegations of torture and kidnapping, stemming from reports by many individuals who claim to have experienced severe physical and psychological abuse during their interception and subsequent detention in Israel, concluding on May 21 with their expulsion.
Ben Gvir, known for his extreme views within Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government, holds the position of head of the Israeli prison police. On May 20, he released a controversial video showcasing himself among detained Flotilla activists, who were seen tied up and held face down at the port of Ashdod in Israel. The footage sparked outrage, resulting in significant criticism from various governments, including the Italian government, which labeled the scenes as 'unacceptable' and called for official apologies from Israel. In response, Netanyahu and other officials distanced themselves from the video while reiterating Israel's right to intercept the Flotilla.
Following their expulsion to Istanbul, Turkey, nearly fifty activists required hospitalization due to injuries inflicted by Israeli soldiers. Adalah, a Palestinian NGO and independent legal center, has reported collecting numerous testimonies alleging the use of tasers and electric stun guns against the activists.
Lawyers from Adalah who interacted with many activists during their detention reported discovering dozens of individuals with suspected broken ribs caused by the abuse sustained. Additionally, three activists were hospitalized after arriving in Israel, and injuries consistent with rubber bullet impacts were evident on some of the detainees' bodies during the military interception of their boats.
In a sarcastic response to the criticism surrounding these incidents, Ben Gvir took to his X profile, stating, "The Boot Country has become the Flip Flop Country," a remark that has drawn further ire from critics of his stance.
This investigation not only shines a light on the treatment of activists in such contentious regions but also raises broader questions regarding human rights practices and the treatment of dissenters under the current Israeli administration.
