Tentative Agreement Reached for 60-Day Ceasefire in Strait of Hormuz Between U.S. and Iran
American and Iranian negotiators are reportedly in preliminary agreement through intermediaries regarding a 60-day ceasefire that is expected to facilitate free passage through the crucial Strait of Hormuz. This information, obtained by Axios, indicates that during this window, Iran will be allowed to sell oil freely while discussions about its nuclear energy program will take place.
According to unnamed sources, Iran is expected to commit to never producing nuclear weapons, pause its uranium enrichment, and dispose of its stockpiles of enriched uranium as part of this ceasefire arrangement. Furthermore, Iran is required to remove any mines from the Strait during this period, and in exchange, the United States will consider releasing some of Iran's frozen assets.
Notably, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' news agency Tasnim, citing information from the Lebanon-based Al-Mayadeen, claims that the agreement focuses mainly on easing tensions rather than detailing provisions regarding Iran's nuclear program. The agreement reportedly includes a stipulation that the U.S. would withdraw its naval forces from areas near Iranian waters, with hopes of restoring ship traffic in the Strait within 30 days.
In terms of financial implications, the reports suggest that approximately $12 billion in frozen Iranian assets would be released. However, Tasnim highlights that the agreement as it stands doesn't specify that traffic in the Strait of Hormuz would return to pre-war conditions. Instead, it is expected that a limited number of vessels would be permitted to pass through the waters in the first month of the ceasefire, conditional on the U.S. lifting its blockade.
As of now, there have been no formal statements from the White House confirming the details of this agreement. However, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio mentioned during his visit to India that additional updates regarding Iran could be forthcoming, particularly concerning the situation in Hormuz.
This tentative agreement, if successful, could mark a pivotal moment in U.S.-Iran relations and a significant step towards reducing tensions in a region often fraught with conflict. The international community will be watching closely for any official communications or further developments in this ongoing situation.
