Tragic Capsizing in Halong Bay Claims 34 Lives as Rescue Efforts Continue
At least 34 individuals have tragically lost their lives, and eleven others have been rescued following the capsizing of a tourist boat in Halong Bay, Vietnam. Authorities reported the incident, which occurred around 12:55 PM, is believed to have been triggered by powerful winds affecting the area, as informed by Vietnam Express news portal.
The vessel, named Wonder Sea, was carrying 48 tourists along with five crew members through the picturesque bay situated on Vietnam's northeastern coast when it encountered severe weather. Reports indicate the ship lost GPS signal around 2:05 PM, according to the Quang Ninh Provincial People's Committee.
In response to the disaster, authorities have mobilized a range of rescue services including border guards, the navy, police, port officials, and 27 boats accompanied by two rescue speedboats, all coordinated from a command center. Divers are currently on the scene, searching both the deck and the submerged interior of the boat.
However, rescue efforts have faced challenges due to heavy rain hindering visibility, even though the sea conditions have calmed. Among the survivors, a ten-year-old boy has been admitted to Bai Chay Hospital, according to center director Le Ngoc Dung. The child sustained multiple injuries but is reported to be conscious and in stable condition.
Another remarkable story of survival emerged from a 14-year-old boy, who spent four hours trapped beneath the capsized boat, taking refuge in an air pocket that formed due to the capsizing. The deputy director of the Halong Cruise Association, Bui Cong Hoan, noted that there was a reserve of oxygen about 50 centimeters high enough for the teenager to breathe. Eventually, rescuers broke a window and were able to extract him to safety.
Halong Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage site, covers approximately 1500 square kilometers and is well known for its stunning islets and high cliffs, attracting millions of tourists each year. The ongoing rescue operations continue to be a priority as officials and teams work tirelessly to locate and aid any remaining individuals affected by this tragic event.
