Tragic Raids: Israeli Forces Kill 13 in Southern Syria, Including Women and Children
At least 13 people, including women and children, have been killed during an Israeli military raid on a village in southern Syria, marking one of the deadliest actions since Israel's control of the region increased a year ago. Reports indicate that the raid occurred in Beit Jin, where Israeli forces aimed to detain local men but initiated gunfire upon facing community resistance. This led to the flight of dozens of families from the area and was described by Syria's Foreign Ministry as a horrific massacre.
Local sources mentioned that the casualties included families, highlighting the tragic loss of a couple and their two young children, alongside relatives who had recently tied the knot. Eyewitness Firas Daher reported that the Israeli troops moved in around 3 AM, encountering only light resistance before responding with drones, helicopters, and heavy machine-gun fire. Efforts to transport the injured to safety were thwarted as Israeli forces targeted vehicles attempting to leave the area.
Israel maintains that the operation was directed at the Jamaa Islamiya militant group, accused of plotting attacks on Israeli territory. They reported that six Israeli soldiers were injured by return fire from militants, prompting the extensive use of force which included air support. Following the operation, Israel claimed to have detained all suspects and neutralized several of the opposing fighters.
These ongoing episodes of violence are set against a backdrop of increased tensions following the fall of former Syrian President Bashar Assad in December 2024. Israeli forces have routinely conducted operations in southern Syria, focusing on capturing individuals labeled as militants, alongside multiple airstrikes targeting Syrian military installations.
The Syrian government has called for immediate international intervention to halt Israeli operations, labeling the actions as violations of national sovereignty. The situation has deteriorated in the region, especially following a recent Israeli airstrike in Beirut that killed a high-ranking Hezbollah official.
The United Nations has reported extensive civilian casualties in Israeli operations across Lebanon, bringing attention to the rising death toll in the aftermath of regional conflicts.
As the humanitarian situation grows more dire, the fate of the affected communities remains precarious, attracting condemnation and demands for accountability from various international entities.
