Turkish Police Raid Main Opposition Party Headquarters Amid Political Turmoil

Turkish police, clad in riot gear, stormed the offices of the main opposition party, the Republican People's Party (CHP), deploying tear gas and rubber bullets against party leaders, officials, and supporters who had barricaded themselves inside the building for three days. This protest was in response to a recent court ruling that mandated the party to change its secretary. Among those inside the party's headquarters was Özgür Özel, a key leader of the Turkish opposition who had been elected secretary of the CHP in 2023. However, an appellate court in Ankara issued a ruling on May 21, which annulled Özel's appointment, interpreted by many as another governmental tactic employed by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's authoritarian regime to stifle opposition ahead of the 2028 presidential elections. The court's ruling reinstated Özel's predecessor, Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, whom Özel defeated during the 2023 presidential elections. Kılıçdaroğlu has since significantly reduced his political activities. The controversial lawsuit undermined the results of the 2023 party congress where Özel was elected, citing alleged formal irregularities in the voting process. These allegations had backing from the government, and the judiciary in Turkey is widely viewed as lacking independence. The recent ruling supported these accusations and effectively annulled decisions made during that congress and any subsequent gatherings. Moreover, it ignored a previous attempt by the CHP to protect Özel by reelecting him at a congress in September 2025, prompting a lower court to dismiss the original lawsuit. During the police raid on the CHP headquarters, supporters fought back initially by spraying officers with fire extinguishers but faced overwhelming force. The response from the police resulted in the destruction of doors, furniture, and windows on the ground floor. After eventually exiting the building, Özel addressed journalists gathered outside, stating, "We are leaving the headquarters only to retake control in a way that will no longer be obstructed by anyone. When we return, neither this administration nor its collaborators will dare to do so again." The events unfolding in Turkey present a stark illustration of the increasing tension between the government and opposition parties as the nation prepares for crucial upcoming elections.
