Accident in Downtown Madrid Injures Three Women and a Baby
A significant accident occurred in downtown Madrid on Sunday afternoon, injuring three women and a one-year-old baby. The incident involved a National Police car that struck the pedestrians at approximately 4:10 PM at the intersection of Narváez and Alcalá streets. According to reports from police and Emergency Madrid sources, one of the women sustained serious injuries, while the baby has been hospitalized with a reserved prognosis. The baby's mother and a third woman were reported to be in less serious and minor condition, respectively.
The police patrol was reportedly responding to a call for assistance regarding a violent individual who had assaulted another person. As the patrol car approached the scene, its acoustic and lighting signals were activated, prompting surrounding vehicles to pull aside. However, an unexpected maneuver by one driver led to the patrol needing to make a sharp turn, ultimately resulting in the police vehicle mounting the sidewalk and colliding with the three pedestrians, including the baby.
In the wake of the accident, the Municipal Police initiated an investigation to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident. Emergency response teams were quick to arrive on the scene, with Samur-Civil Protection paramedics attending to the injured individuals. The most critically injured was a 47-year-old woman whose condition was described as catastrophic due to severe foot injuries; she was subsequently taken to La Paz Hospital. A 34-year-old woman, who suffered a fractured femur and multiple contusions, was transported to 12 de Octubre Hospital with a prognosis deemed less serious.
The one-year-old baby suffered both facial trauma and cranioencephalic injuries, leading to an admission to Niño Jesús Hospital, where further evaluation of the head injury is awaited. Additionally, a third woman, who sustained a leg injury, was taken to Gregorio Marañón Hospital in mild condition. Paramedics also provided support to three others, including the baby's grandmother, who experienced anxiety attacks; two of them were subsequently admitted to a hospital.
The community is now left to grapple with the aftermath of this tragic event, as inquiries continue into how such an accident occurred involving a police vehicle.
