Ada Colau Announces Departure from Barcelona City Council Amid Future Mayoral Aspirations

Ada Colau, the former mayor of Barcelona and current leader of the Comuns party in the City Council, has declared her intention to leave the council in October. However, she has not dismissed the possibility of running for mayor again in the upcoming municipal elections.

In an interview set to be published by the digital outlet Crític, Colau reflected on her eight years in office, stating: "It is good to take a step back to gather ideas and listen to other people." This strategic pause aims to rejuvenate her political approach as she explores ways to forge international alliances through her involvement with the Fundació Sentit Comú and to rethink the left's strategies moving forward.

When asked about her potential candidacy for mayor in the next elections, Colau expressed that she would not rule out leading the Comuns party's efforts. "We will do everything possible to achieve it, including myself personally. What role each one will have in this process we will see when the time comes," she noted.

Colau also took the opportunity to criticize the current mayor, Jaume Collboni of the Socialist Party, calling him a "great disappointment." She argued that even worse than Collboni would be a return to power for the Junts candidate, former mayor Xavier Trias.

In her stance regarding the Comuns party's direction, Colau emphasized that in this term, their focus should be on building an alternative for Barcelona from the opposition. She believes that they might achieve more influence and contribute constructively from opposition seats in the Parliament than as part of the governing coalition.

Colau's reflections and her future aspirations highlight the dynamic political landscape of Barcelona, with the potential for renewed leadership and innovative approaches from the left as they prepare for the challenges of the upcoming political season.
