AfD Chairman Tino Chrupalla Expresses Support for Possible Chancellor Candidacy of Cochairman Alice Weidel

In a recent ARD summer interview, AfD chairman Tino Chrupalla expressed his support for the idea of his cochairman, Alice Weidel, as a potential candidate for chancellor. Chrupalla stated, 'Alice Weidel would be a very good candidate for chancellor, which I would also support.' However, he made it clear that he is not preempting any decisions and highlighted that the final candidate for chancellor will be decided through a party convention or by the grassroots within the party. Weidel, on the other hand, remained reserved in her comments during a ZDF summer interview, stating, 'I can imagine many candidates, and that has not been decided yet.' She emphasized that the decision on the chancellor candidacy will be made in the coming months by a party convention or a membership survey.

Chrupalla reiterated that the ultimate decision must be made by the AfD's bodies, suggesting that this process will likely take place in the upcoming spring. Both Chrupalla and Weidel were reelected as the leadership team for two more years at the end of June during an AfD federal party convention. The AfD reported that nearly 83 percent voted in favor of Chrupalla, while Weidel received almost 80 percent of yes votes (with abstentions not being counted). The dynamics within the AfD leadership and the speculation surrounding the chancellor candidacy reflect ongoing developments within the party as they look towards the future.
