Aina Calvo Appointed as New Secretary of State for Security in Interior Ministry

Aina Calvo, previously the Secretary of State for Equality and for the Eradication of Violence against Women, has been appointed as the new number two in the Ministry of the Interior. She replaces Rafael Pérez, who stepped down for personal reasons. Calvo, a native of Palma de Mallorca born in 1969, holds a degree in Philosophy and Humanities and a doctorate in Educational Sciences.

Before her appointment, Calvo served under the ministry led by Ana Redondo and has an extensive political background including serving as the Government delegate in the Balearic Islands and as the Socialist mayor of Palma de Mallorca from 2007 to 2011. Additionally, she directed the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation, where she also held the position of deputy director.

Calvo's transition to the Ministry of the Interior as the Secretary of State for Security comes as Rafael Pérez communicates his intention to resign. Pérez has been part of Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska's team since July 2018 and was appointed as Secretary of State for Security on January 17, 2020. Though his departure has prompted speculation, including links to an Israeli munitions contract and rumors of wrongdoing within the party, Minister Marlaska has emphasized Pérez's dedication and the challenging nature of his decision to step down.

The official change will occur during the upcoming Council of Ministers on Tuesday, June 3. In Congress, Marlaska expressed regret over Pérez's resignation, stating, "I would have loved for him to continue, but sometimes in life, even if it's hard, you have to let people decide."

With this new appointment, Calvo is poised to play a pivotal role in addressing national security matters in Spain, building on her previous experience in governmental roles.
