Alberto Núñez Feijóo Expands Political Alliances Amid Internal Criticism

Alberto Núñez Feijóo, the president of the People's Party (PP), has signaled a willingness to collaborate with the political faction Junts in Congress votes focused on tax reductions and fulfilling his electoral program. Responding to internal dissent over his increasing proximity to Carles Puigdemont's party, Feijóo stated, "I don’t mind voting the same as Junts if it is for this objective."

In a special address in Madrid reflecting on the political year, he emphasized that his principles remain steadfast despite the fact that his party has remained in opposition even after winning the elections on July 23. Feijóo highlighted that Junts has shifted its position, citing a past instance where they voted in favor of taxes on energy companies, but reversed their stance this year.

The opposition leader expressed his readiness to align with other political allies, such as the PNV, Vox, UPN, and Junts, in both the Senate and Congress, noting that collaboration is vital for securing votes necessary for governance. However, he remained non-committal regarding a potential motion of no confidence supported by Puigdemont against Prime Minister Sánchez.

On the subject of Vox, Feijóo adopted a firmer tone, describing their behavior as occasionally "contradictory or confusing." He challenged the party to clarify their stance on whether they aim to facilitate Spain's change or impede it. His comments come amid Vox's refusal to support budgets in regions led by the PP.

Reflecting on the political climate, Feijóo commended Carlos Mázón, the president of the Generalitat, for his effective handling of reconstruction following a recent disaster. He emphasized that his focus lies on assisting families, workers, and businesses rather than scrutinizing minor expenses.

Looking ahead to 2024, Feijóo painted a grim outlook, characterizing the current government as fraught with corruption and lamenting the financial struggles faced by many Spaniards despite optimistic economic claims from the government. He stated that for most families, the months have become longer, with many still grappling with unresolved issues from the start of the year.

"The politics of this country have drifted away from the people," he asserted, calling for a recovery of political accountability. He attributed the current economic growth largely to public spending while criticizing the persistent issues of high unemployment and rising living costs, stating that despite increased tax contributions, citizens are burdened with debt.

Feijóo expressed skepticism over the government’s judicial year, remarking that political scandals have become a norm, suggesting that corruption cases consistently emerge while half of the government remains entangled in judicial scrutiny.

In closing, Feijóo assured citizens of his commitment to govern in a future devoid of blackmail or the commodification of votes, highlighting the PP's stance as the only viable alternative for restoring dignity to Spain and fostering hope.
