Alberto Núñez Feijóo Faces Backlash Over English Language Comments
Alberto Núñez Feijóo, the president of Spain's People's Party (PP), has come under intense scrutiny on social media after remarks he made during an interview on the popular television program, El Hormiguero. Feijóo admitted to struggling with the English language, stating, "I speak English poorly; I don't touch it because this mobile translates it for me directly," when asked by host Pablo Motos about his efforts to learn the world's most widely spoken language.
Despite recognizing English as a crucial skill, Feijóo attempted to justify his shortcomings by citing his education at a rural school. His comments elicited a mixed response online, with many users questioning whether someone aspiring to be the president of the Spanish government should openly acknowledge their lack of proficiency in such an essential language.
One social media user lamented, "Pathetic to blame the rural school when he studied secondary school from 14 to 17 at the Maristas de León." Another user emphasized the modern requirement for potential leaders to be fluent in English, particularly given the importance of personal interactions in international relations.
Even Oscar Puente, the Minister of Transport, reacted sarcastically, remarking, "How is his English? Poorly, like everything else, Alberto." The ongoing tale of Feijóo's struggles with English is not new; prior to the 2023 general elections, during which he lost his seat in the opposition, he openly acknowledged the need to start learning the language, declaring, "I just had a professor for English starting last Monday and it turns out they've called elections."
He argued that successful negotiations require precise language and clarity. "When you are negotiating very important issues for your country, or representing your country in an international forum, you have to be very scrupulous with what you say," he noted, clarifying that he preferred working with those proficient in English for any discussions requiring such expertise.
Despite his ongoing struggles, Feijóo has conceded that mastering English is imperative for anyone aiming for the presidency. "I believe that learning English is one of the things we must do for those who want to be prime ministers," he admitted, recognizing the pivotal role that language plays in effective leadership and international diplomacy.
