Alberto Núñez Feijóo Submits WhatsApp Messages to Court Ahead of Testimony

On Wednesday, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, the president of the Popular Party (PP), submitted WhatsApp messages exchanged with Carlos Mazón to the Court of Instruction of Catarroja. This submission came in anticipation of his upcoming testimony set for January 9, which he has requested to conduct via telematic means. According to PP officials, the messages were provided upon the judge's voluntary indication that such evidence may be submitted. Feijóo has presented a notarial record that certifies the messages received from Mazón on the day of the DANA (Adverse Weather Events) and includes the context of those exchanges for clarity. Reports indicate that the communication between Feijóo and Mazón was strictly through WhatsApp, with no calls or emails exchanged. The judge summoned Feijóo to testify following a request from the Association of Mortal Victims of DANA 290, who are the private prosecution in the ongoing proceedings. The investigating magistrate believes that Feijóo's insight could shed light on comments made by Mazón, who was then the president of the Valencian Generalitat, in connection with discussions involving Salomé Pradas, the counselor of Justice and Interior, who is currently under investigation. In his correspondence to the court, Feijóo expressed his absolute willingness to cooperate with the investigation while highlighting the respect owed to the victims of the DANA and their families. The PP’s stance is one of complete trust in the judicial system, asserting that there is no ‘lawfare’ occurring in Spain, and reinforcing their commitment to comply with judicial decisions without contesting them. This case highlights the ongoing intersection of politics and legal matters in Spain, as leading figures navigate the complexities of accountability amidst public tragedy.
