Almeria Earthquake Shakes Multiple Provinces: Magnitude 4.3 Recorded
The National Geographic Institute (IGN) has reported a magnitude 4.3 earthquake that struck in the early hours of Monday, centered in the Almerian town of Tabernas. The tremors were felt across various areas of the provinces of Almería, Granada, Jaén, and Murcia, although, fortunately, no personal injuries or significant material damages have been reported as of now.
The earthquake occurred at 12:55 AM at a shallow depth in the municipality of Tabernas, located in the Los Filabres comarca. Following the initial quake, up to 14 aftershocks have been recorded, the most significant measuring 2.6 at 5:38 AM. Reports indicate that the earthquake was felt with an intensity rating of IV-V in the Almerian towns of Tabernas, Bacares, Serón, and Gádor, with intensity IV registered in Alhabia, Tíjola, and Olula del Río, while areas such as Abla, Albanchez, Alsodux, Benahadux, and other nearby locations reported an intensity of III/IV.
Furthermore, the tremor was felt with intensity III in Bayarque, Benizalón, Almería capital, El Ejido, Los Gallardos, Vícar, Níjar, Rioja, Senés, Sorbas, Turre, and Vera, all situated within the province of Almería. Other areas including Carboneras, Chercos, Arboleas, Garrucha, as well as locales in Jaén like Linares, Quesada, Santo Tomé, and Villacarrillo felt the quake with varying intensities. The earthquake also reached regions in Granada, such as Cúllar, Motril, Santa Fe de Mondújar, and Líjar.
In addition to the 4.3 magnitude quake, a separate incident was recorded earlier this month—a 4.9 magnitude earthquake with its epicenter in Fuengirola that shook Málaga, Sevilla, and Córdoba. This tremor was noted at 10:38 AM on Friday, originating from a depth of 79 kilometers off the Western Costa del Sol.
Residents and officials remain vigilant in the wake of these seismic activities, monitoring any further occurrences and ensuring preparedness in case of stronger aftershocks. The IGN continues to update the public on the situation and encourages individuals to stay informed through official channels.
