Ambition Cruise Ship Passengers Held Aboard Amid Gastroenteritis Outbreak
As many as 1,700 passengers are currently being held on board the cruise ship Ambition, docked in southwest France, following an outbreak of possible gastroenteritis affecting dozens of travelers. The Ambition was on a planned cruise around France and Spain with passengers having boarded from Belfast and Liverpool on May 8 and 9.
According to the local health agency in the French department of Gironde, up to 50 passengers have reported symptoms consistent with acute stomach sickness. A concerning note from this situation is that one passenger on board has died, as reported by Reuters, citing French media sources.
In response to the health crisis, immediate action was taken: affected passengers were seen by onboard medical personnel and subsequently isolated in their rooms to prevent further spread of the illness. The planned disembarkation at the port of Bordeaux has been halted pending detailed medical tests. The Infectious Diseases Department at the Bordeaux University Hospital (CHU) is currently analyzing samples taken from those exhibiting symptoms.
Ambassador Cruise Line, the ship's operator, has confirmed that several guests and crew members aboard the Ambition are experiencing symptoms associated with gastrointestinal illness during what was supposed to be a 14-night journey. In a statement, the cruise line reassured guests of their commitment to health and safety, emphasizing that any reported illnesses are treated with utmost seriousness.
To mitigate the outbreak, enhanced sanitation and disease prevention protocols have been promptly implemented on the ship, aligning with established public health procedures following the initial reports of illness.
While there is heightened concern among passengers, regional health authorities have clarified that there is currently no link between the ongoing outbreak aboard the Ambition and a separate hantavirus outbreak reported on another cruise ship, Hondius. As investigations continue, passengers remain on board, and the focus now shifts to their safety and health.
