American Veterans Condemn Trump's Ukraine Plan: A Betrayal of Democracy
American citizens involved in the Ukrainian war effort are expressing embarrassment and dismay over former President Donald Trump's ongoing pressure on Kyiv. Many view his administration's recent proposal for peace as a treacherous betrayal of U.S. foreign policy. An American special forces veteran, who has been pivotal in training and advising the Ukrainian military since the Russian invasion began in February 2022, labeled the proposal as "complete nonsense" and a "betrayal by Trump."
Last week, a 28-point peace plan reportedly drafted by Trump envoy Steve Witkoff, in negotiation with Kremlin advisor Kirill Dmitriev, was leaked to the public. Observers have recognized it as merely a rebranding of Vladimir Putin's maximalist demands on Ukraine.
When Russian forces first invaded Ukraine nearly four years ago, thousands of foreign volunteers—including soldiers, veterans, trainers, and medics—travelled to the country to assist in what was regarded as a collective defense of democracy against imperialist aggression. Among these volunteers were many Americans, including Republicans who struggle to reconcile Trump's antagonism toward Ukraine with their commitment to its defense.
Within the Republican Party, voices have risen in criticism of Trump’s latest demands. Congressman Don Bacon characterized it as "gross buffoonery" and as a plan that appeared to have been scripted by Russia itself. The sentiment echoed by a source involved with the proposal dubbed Witkoff as a "Russian sycophant."
"I'm worried that they are truly being cornered into this situation," the source lamented. "Too much blood has been spilled. I don't think Zelenskyy could agree to any deal that would involve ceding territory or surrendering sovereignty, such as decisions regarding NATO membership or military capability."
Confusion has also reigned over the plan's authorship. Republican Senator Mike Rounds claimed at the Halifax International Security Forum that the Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, had called it a preliminary offer from the Kremlin—a charge Rubio publicly denied.
Another American working in Ukraine's defense sector expressed disappointment over the ongoing tumult in relations between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He empathized with the diplomats at the Kyiv embassy, describing them as "not aligned with MAGA" but "totally handcuffed" by the current U.S. administration.
Steve Andre, a Michigannative who has served in the Ukrainian military as a press officer, shared his experiences of disillusionment. He indicated that the peace plan represents a significant decline in U.S. global interests. "I'm disappointed in the American people. If they had even a fraction of the courage and willpower of the Ukrainians, America might still be a great place," he said.
The proposed plan demands major concessions from Ukraine, including the relinquishment of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, a constitutional commitment to never join NATO, and a drastic reduction in its military strength and arsenal.
A NATO veteran currently training Ukrainian soldiers alongside former U.S. servicemen criticized the plan, labeling it as a pathetic attempt driven by the financial motives of the U.S. government. "They think they can replicate the profitable ventures that figures like Cheney and Rumsfeld pursued by engaging with Russia, while trying to control recovery efforts here," he stated, referring to past rapprochement efforts during the Bush administration.
He described the American trainers and veterans he works with as "angry and resigned" at the prospect of losing U.S. support. "The Trump administration is filled with individuals who have never faced real stakes in their lives. They have concocted a foolish fantasy of peace, but surely they understand what surrender means for involved forces."
As tensions continue to mount, the plea from American veterans, who have risked their lives for the cause, resonates deeply: any negotiation that undermines Ukraine’s sovereignty poses a grave threat not only to the nation but to the ideals of democracy worldwide.
