Asturian Cider Culture Earns UNESCO Recognition as Intangible Cultural Heritage
Asturian cider culture has officially earned its place as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, following a significant announcement made by UNESCO in Paraguay on Wednesday. This recognition came during the 19th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO, which is taking place in the city of Luque until Saturday.
Spain's Secretary of State for Culture, Jordi Martí Grau, expressed the pride felt by Asturias and its people, stating, "Today is a great day for Asturias and for Asturian culture." He was part of the Spanish delegation that included the Minister of Culture, Language Policy, and Sports of Asturias, Vanessa Gutiérrez, along with the Spanish ambassador to UNESCO, Miquel Iceta.
Martí emphasized that cider transcends its status as merely a beverage; it is a potent symbol of culture and community. The comprehensive application dossier submitted for consideration included vital information about the intricate processes of apple planting, cider production, distribution, and consumption, alongside the cultural practices and traditional knowledge that have been passed down through generations.
The dossier highlighted the cultural significance of cider within Asturian society, illustrating its integral role in festive rituals and daily life, as well as its representation in the rich vocabulary that encompasses the cider-making tradition. One of the standout cultural practices is the distinctive method of pouring cider, known for its unique characteristics that set it apart from other beverages.
In anticipation of the committee's decision, the Government of Asturias celebrated the candidacy by illuminating key buildings and landmarks in green, paying homage to the traditional color of the cider bottle. This gesture symbolizes both the lush landscapes of Asturias and the apples that are essential in producing the region’s iconic drink.
In addition to the UNESCO recognition, the cider culture of Asturias has also received the National Hospitality Award 2024, honoring its contribution to the Promotion of Spanish Culture and Gastronomy. This dual acknowledgment underscores the importance of Asturian cider not just as a cherished local tradition, but as a cultural emblem that resonates throughout Spain and beyond.
