Barcelona to Establish New Courts to Combat Petty Crime

In a significant move to enhance its judicial response to minor offenses, the Ministry of Justice and the Generalitat have come together to implement a new emergency plan in Barcelona. Announced in a meeting that included key figures such as Generalitat President Salvador Illa, Minister of Justice Félix Bolaños, Justice Conseller Ramon Espadaler, and Barcelona Mayor Jaume Collboni, the initiative will see the establishment of a third guard court focused on petty thefts along with four additional criminal courts by next year.

This decision aims to tackle the increasing rate of repeat offenses that have sparked concerns among the residents of Catalonia's capital. With the new courts, Barcelona will total 33 criminal courts, outpacing Madrid by two. Minister Bolaños emphasized that this expansion is crucial for improving the efficiency of the legal process, particularly for cases involving theft and other minor crimes.

The urgency of the situation is underscored by the perception of insecurity that petty crimes engender in the community. With the establishment of these additional courts, the government seeks to facilitate quicker trials, thereby addressing public anxiety and ensuring that justice is served promptly in minor offense cases.

This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance public safety and restore confidence in the judicial system, reflecting a commitment from the local and national governments to prioritize the welfare of Barcelona's citizens.
