Borås City: A Model for Health and Community Engagement

With nature at their doorstep and a vibrant community life, the residents of Borås City are equipped with the essential elements for a healthy lifestyle. Mia Wallengren, the head of the Leisure and Public Health Administration in Borås, highlights a series of health-promoting initiatives designed to make physical activity accessible to all. "For over 20 years, we've been collecting data on the well-being of Borås residents, and this welfare report has laid the groundwork for the investments we are making today," she states.

The initiatives aim to enhance both physical and mental health for residents of all ages, promoting creativity and movement in nature. A newly produced outdoor magazine serves as a resource, offering tips on local activities, trails, and hiking routes. Additionally, the launch of a nature festival is set to showcase the role of nature in fostering creativity, playfulness, and movement within the community.

For the third consecutive year, Borås City is introducing SMweek, featuring a variety of activities, including a popular tryout tour facilitated by their Leisure Bank. The city’s preschools are also encouraged to promote increased physical movement, while a large swimming program is in place and plans are underway for a gaming initiative that combines physical activity with gaming.

As a newly recognized PepCommunity, Borås City is receiving continued support and access to innovative tools and methods to further enhance these initiatives. Håkan Eriksson, chair of the Leisure and Public Health Committee, emphasizes that their strength lies in leveraging existing resources and enhancing ongoing efforts to boost physical activity and improve public health. "Our initiatives are rooted in a long-term strategy and the successes reflect courageous decision-making over time. I believe this is a model for how local actions can lead to better public health and a more inclusive society," he explains.

The results demonstrate that effective collaboration between the municipality, local associations, and residents can significantly impact community health. Wallengren expresses hope that these initiatives not only empower the residents of Borås but also provide inspiration for other municipalities seeking to enhance public health. "Together, we can bring about change," she concludes.
