Cannes 2026: A Star-Studded Lineup and a Focus on Global Cinema
The Cannes Film Festival is set to commence its 79th edition on the Côte d'Azur from May 12 to 23, 2026, boasting an impressive lineup of films and celebrities. Stars expected to grace the red carpet include Gillian Anderson, Rami Malek, Cara Delevingne, and John Travolta, who is making his directorial debut this year.
The competition for the prestigious Palme d'Or will feature notable films from celebrated directors such as Pedro Almodóvar, Hirokazu Koreeda, Pawel Pawlikowski, László Nemes, and Asghar Farhadi. Almodóvar returns with 'Bitter Christmas,' a story of filmmaker friends who exploit one another's lives for their art. Pawlikowski's 'Fatherland,' which stars Sandra Hüller, recounts the return of German novelist Thomas Mann from exile post-World War II. Meanwhile, Hungarian filmmaker Nemes presents 'Moulin,' a drama about the French resistance, and Romanian director Cristian Mungiu will showcase 'Fjord,' set in Norway.
Exiled Russian director Andrey Zvyagintsev will premiere his political thriller 'Minotaur,' and Farhadi's film 'Parallel Lives' stars Isabelle Huppert and Vincent Cassel, adding to the festival's diverse offerings.
In a striking departure from last year, this year's competition notably lacks American directors, with the exception of Ira Sachs, who presents 'The Man I Love,' a musical fantasy exploring the impact of the AIDS epidemic on artists, featuring Malek among others. American filmmakers will still feature in the Un Certain Regard section, with Jane Schoenbrun's 'Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma' starring Gillian Anderson, and Jordan Firstman's directorial debut 'Club Kid,' featuring Cara Delevingne.
Highlighting the competitive nature of the festival, Cannes director Thierry Frémaux noted that 2,491 films were submitted from 141 countries, marking a significant increase in submissions over the past decade.
The documentary segment of the festival promises compelling content, with Stephen Soderbergh’s 'John Lennon: The Last Interview' focusing on Lennon’s final interview before his assassination, while Eric Cantona’s life story is chronicled in a new documentary featuring interviews with notable figures like David Beckham.
Frémaux also teased a major thematic exploration of football rivalries with 'The Match,' which delves into the infamous 1986 World Cup quarterfinal between England and Argentina, and Ron Howard presents a documentary about iconic photographer Richard Avedon.
As Cannes prepares to unveil a diverse range of films and foster new voices in cinema, anticipation builds for the unexpected surprises that often emerge in the days leading up to the festival, making this year's event a must-watch for film enthusiasts around the globe.
