A car plowed into football fans celebrating Liverpool's Premier League title victory on Monday, May 26, injuring several people. Authorities reported that a 53-year-old man has been detained in connection with the incident. Witnesses recounted scenes of chaos as a dark-colored people carrier swerved through the massive crowds gathered to witness the celebratory parade of the English team.
An AFP journalist at the scene observed at least four individuals being transported away on stretchers while eyewitness accounts described the horrifying moments when screams were heard, and an enraged crowd formed around the vehicle before police arrived.
Merseyside Police urged for calm and confirmed that the detained individual was a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area. They have initiated extensive inquiries to establish the circumstances leading to the collision, as a spokesperson mentioned the ongoing investigation.
Cordon lines were established around the area, and a fire engine was dispatched to provide assistance. The North West Ambulance Service confirmed that its crews were assessing the situation alongside other emergency services. "Our priority is to ensure people receive the medical help they need as quickly as possible," the service stated in response to the incident.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer labeled the scenes in Liverpool as appalling. "My thoughts are with all those injured or affected," he wrote on X, adding, "I want to thank the police and emergency services for their swift and ongoing response to this shocking incident."
