Cardinals Convene for Critical Preconclave Discussions Amidst Scandals

The eighth meeting of the general congregation of cardinals was held on Friday morning as preconclave discussions commenced, confirmed Matteo Bruni, the director of the Vatican press office. Over 180 cardinals were present at the meeting, with more than 120 of them holding the right to vote in the upcoming papal conclave.

During this significant gathering, approximately 25 cardinals took the opportunity to voice their concerns and insights. Central to their discussions were pressing issues surrounding countertestimony, including the ongoing challenges posed by sexual abuse scandals and financial controversies that have plagued the Church in recent years.

Bruni noted that the atmosphere was one of urgent reflection as the cardinals prepared to address these critical issues while moving forward in their responsibilities. The conclave to elect a new pope will commence next Wednesday, involving 133 cardinal electors. This election follows the passing of Pope Francis, who died from a stroke after battling pneumonia on Easter Monday. The upcoming conclave represents a pivotal moment for the Catholic Church as it seeks to confront internal crises and set a course for the future.
