Carlos Mazón Faces Criticism Amid Political Turmoil in Valencia

Carlos Mazón is determined to weather the storm. Despite being under significant scrutiny, with noticeable dissent from some members of his party, Mazón's close associates claim they are experiencing unwarranted harassment due to the ongoing controversies surrounding him. A key issue arose from events on that ill-fated Tuesday, the 29th, which prompted his team to publicly disclose details about a lunch he had with journalist Maribel Vilaplana at El Ventorro restaurant. Supposedly, they had already been informed of severe weather conditions but received the news too late.

In recent days, numerous leaks from both the central and Valencian governments have emerged, with officials releasing recordings and messages that cast blame on one another for the inadequate response to the prevailing tragedy. In private discussions, officials across various parties agree on the public's legitimate frustration. A former minister of Mariano Rajoy remarked, 'What has happened is unprecedented in Spain. All administrations failed.'

Mazón is in a difficult position, facing criticism for not adequately preparing for the disaster. As it stands, Alberto Núñez Feijóo still supports him, albeit with little enthusiasm. This endorsement seems to waver as words from Miguel Tellado urging Mazón to provide explanations stirred unease within the regional ranks. Some members of the PP in Valencia expressed frustration, stating, 'If he’s going to say that, it’s better he says nothing.'

The consensus among several prominent leaders within the party is that Mazón's response to the crisis has been lacking. An unnamed regional baron stated, 'It can’t be that Sánchez gets away with it when the Government has not been even close to being up to par.'

Adding to the concern is the emergence of difficult topics daily, whether it's pertaining to the lunch incident or claims that the councilor was not aware of the impending alert. While public anger is directed at Sánchez, many in Valencia still expect more accountability from their regional president.

A faction within the party believes that Mazón's position is precarious. While no immediate action is anticipated, they suggest that performance in upcoming polls will be critical. María José Catalá, the mayor of Valencia, is frequently mentioned as a potential successor, although official channels within Génova dismiss any notion of a leadership change.

Amidst the growing pressure, Feijóo chose to visibly unite with Mazón during a video conference with other territorial leaders. Though no direct acknowledgment of the surrounding controversies occurred, the call for solidarity was evidently understood amongst attendees.

Mazón's team tried to explain the delayed disclosure regarding Vilaplana as necessary for privacy reasons, arguing that her current employment with an audiovisual and communication firm shouldn't be put at risk. They stated, 'There is no more story,' in an attempt to deflect controversy.

Génova has, at least publicly, accepted these explanations; however, there remains a palpable sense of lukewarm support for Mazón. Feijóo’s choice to communicate through press releases rather than engaging directly with the media reflects the tense atmosphere.

In this rapidly evolving political landscape, opinions vary. A regional president noted, 'Someone who seems finished today may have a chance tomorrow.' This remark suggests a belief in the potential for recovery or change in fortunes for Mazón, even if he currently appears strained. As another source commented, 'What we need to do is turn this around. It cannot be that Sánchez gets away with it when the Government has not been even close to being up to par.'

The future remains uncertain for Carlos Mazón as he navigates this political maelstrom.
