Catalonia Faces Severe Flooding Following Heavy Rains

On Monday morning, the northeastern Spanish region of Catalonia experienced significant flooding, particularly in the province of Barcelona, as a result of heavy rains. This situation comes just days after the Valencia region also suffered from catastrophic flooding events.

The severe weather prompted the suspension of regional train services, extensive road closures, and significant disruptions at airports. Specifically, 50 flights in and out of Barcelona El Prat Airport were canceled, while an additional 17 flights were redirected due to the adverse conditions.

Notably, parts of Tarragona—located about 90 kilometers west of Barcelona—and various towns near the airport were inundated with water, causing widespread inconvenience for both residents and travelers. In response to the dangerous weather conditions, the regional government of Catalonia issued a weather alert to residents' mobile phones, impacting areas including Barcelona and the provinces of Baix Llobregat, Garraf, Maresme, Vallès Oriental, and Vallès Occidental.

As the storm wreaked havoc, work activities in these affected areas were halted, and schools remained closed to ensure the safety of students and staff. Within the vicinity of Barcelona Airport, many roadways were completely flooded, leading to damage on airport grounds as well.

According to the meteorological service Meteocat, approximately one hundred millimeters of rainfall was recorded overnight between Sunday and Monday in the province of Tarragona. As Catalonia grapples with the aftermath of this deluge, residents and officials alike remain vigilant as more rain is forecasted in the days to come.
