Catalonia's Court Requests Partial Pardon for Former Parliament President Laura Borràs

The Civil and Criminal Chamber of the Superior Court of Justice of Catalonia (TSJC) has made a significant move regarding Laura Borràs, the former president of the Parliament and of the Junts party. In a recent order, the court has called on the Government to propose a partial pardon for Borràs, who is currently facing a prison sentence due to convictions linked to abuse of power and falsification of official documents.

The order, which was reviewed by Europa Press, requests the pardon specifically for the portion of Borràs' sentence that exceeds two years. She was sentenced to a total of four years, six months, and one day. This means the court has signaled a possible pathway for her to reduce her time in prison, pending the Government's proposal for a partial pardon.

In addition to considering the pardon, the TSJC has decided to suspend Borràs' prison sentence until the matter is resolved, allowing her to remain free for the time being.

This development comes alongside the confirmation of her conviction by the Supreme Court, which rejected any proposal for amnesty. In her original sentencing, Borràs was subjected to 13 years of disqualification from holding public office and a hefty fine of 36,000 euros. The conviction centers on her involvement in irregularly awarding contracts to an individual with whom she had a personal connection.

Borràs's case reflects ongoing political tensions in Catalonia and raises questions about political accountability and the judiciary's role in matters involving public figures. As reactions to the court's latest order unfold, the discourse around justice and political corruption in the region continues to grow, inviting further scrutiny from the public and media alike.
