Catalonia's Interior Minister Criticizes Puigdemont's Escape and Calls for Accountability
Joan Ignasi Elena, the Interior Minister of Catalonia, spoke out on Friday regarding the unexpected escape of Carles Puigdemont after his speech in central Barcelona the previous day. In a press conference at the Interior Ministry, Elena expressed his disappointment and frustration, particularly after the central government shifted the blame for the failed operation to detain the former leader of Junts onto the Mossos d'Esquadra, Catalonia's police force.
Elena described the maneuver as an effort by Junts to undermine and delegitimize the investiture session. He believes that the actions taken represent an attack on the current government and a strategy to position it outside of the independence front. "That is not leadership; it is not building; and it does not have a state mentality," he declared.
Furthermore, Elena emphasized the need to protect the Mossos d'Esquadra, labeling them an extraordinary and powerful police body. He lamented the unfair and false accusations directed at the force, simply because certain individuals were unhappy with the results of the investiture. He stated, "People should not be used, and neither should entities. Citizens cannot be extras in a deception."
Addressing the operation itself, Elena noted that an investigation is already underway to assess what mistakes were made during the attempt to apprehend Puigdemont. Eduard Sallent, the chief commissioner of the Mossos, expressed satisfaction that the primary goal of the investiture session for Salvador Illa was successfully completed. However, he acknowledged that the events did not unfold as planned; the police had intended to detain Puigdemont at the gates of Ciutadella Park but were met with significant obstacles.
Puigdemont's escape was complicated by the presence of supporters and public figures who inadvertently obstructed the police's efforts. By the time the officers attempted to reach him as he left the stage, a crowd had formed, creating a barrier that prevented their access. Sallent recounted that they were made aware of Puigdemont's flight in a white vehicle, and despite attempting to pursue him, they were unable to catch him.
Commenting on the two Mossos agents who were detained for allegedly assisting in Puigdemont's escape, Sallent firmly stated that those officers do not deserve to wear the uniform and have created difficulties for their colleagues. However, he shifted focus back to the public figures who also played a role in hindering the arrest, underscoring the need for accountability across the board.
The situation in Catalonia is precarious, and rising tensions, particularly concerning the independence movement, require careful navigation from both the government and law enforcement. As investigations continue, the implications of Puigdemont's escape could further complicate the dynamics of political leadership and public trust within the region.
