Catalonia's New President Advocates for Policymaking Away from Political Tensions
In a significant first institutional act since taking office, the president of the Generalitat, socialist Salvador Illa, visited the Central Complex of the Mossos d'Esquadra in Sabadell, Barcelona, alongside Interior Minister Núria Parlón. During this visit, Illa emphasized his commitment to ensuring that the men and women serving in Catalonia's police force, the Mossos d'Esquadra, can perform their responsibilities without the influence of political confrontations.
Illa articulated a vision for his government focused on three fundamental tenets: public services, security, and progress. He acknowledged the strength of the current police force but also underscored the potential for continual improvement, committing to increasing the number of officers to 22,000 by the year 2030.
This meeting, involving discussions with corps commanders and police unions, showcased Illa's intent to foster a cooperative environment where law enforcement can operate with a clear focus, detached from the complexities of political strife. The visit served as a platform for Illa to convey his support for the local police units, particularly those based in Egara, further reinforcing the administration's dedication to enhancing public safety and community trust in law enforcement.
In a challenging landscape where political tensions can often mirror in the functioning of public services, Illa's approach appears poised to navigate a path towards greater stability and effectiveness within the Mossos d'Esquadra, ultimately aiming for a safer and more secure Catalonia.
