Catalonia's President Emphasizes Unity and Progress at Constitution Anniversary

Today, Salvador Illa, the president of the Generalitat of Catalonia, underscored the importance of approaching the Constitution with understanding rather than using it as a divisive tool. Upon his arrival at the Congress of Deputies to partake in the anniversary event of the Constitution, Illa expressed that the best way to defend the Constitution is through unity and cooperation, as it embodies a pact among diverse viewpoints and serves as a symbol of collective progress.

Illa reflected on the substantial advancements made under the framework of the Magna Carta over recent years. However, he acknowledged that there remains much work to do, particularly in areas such as the right to access housing. His participation in this anniversary event marks a significant moment, being the first president of the Generalitat in fifteen years to attend the Congress of Deputies for this occasion, a role previously held by José Montilla in 2009.

As Illa expressed his joy in celebrating the Constitution, he was also queried about the demands from Junts regarding the transfer of immigration competencies to Catalonia and whether this demand might influence the approval of the regional budgets. In response, he conveyed optimism, stating, 'I have confidence that things will go well,' but refrained from elaborating further on that matter.

Illa’s presence at the Constitution anniversary event not only signifies a commitment to the principles enshrined in the Constitution but also signals a potential shift towards more collaborative governance in Catalonia. As discussions continue around various competencies and rights, the sentiment shared by the president reflects a broader desire for unity and progress amidst the complexities of regional governance.
