Catalonia's President Illa Calls for Fraternity and Hope in Christmas Address
In his inaugural Christmas address as the President of the Generalitat of Catalonia, Salvador Illa emphasized the importance of fraternity in overcoming division and hatred within society. Speaking from the Gothic Gallery of the Palau de la Generalitat on the holiday of Sant Esteban, Illa reminded listeners that the Christmas season reflects the Christian roots and core values of Catalan society, such as peace and fraternity.
‘Unfortunately, these values are often overlooked,’ Illa noted, citing global conflicts in Gaza, Syria, and Ukraine. He urged the Catalan people to remain steadfast in their commitment to peace and dialogue, affirming that this has always been Catalonia’s approach.
Fraternity, according to Illa, forms the cornerstone of any society, democracy, or nation. It is an essential aspect of life that exists among family members, neighbors, and between different territories. He stated, ‘It is crucial that we strengthen what we share and celebrate our diversity as a wealth.’
Illa also called on Catalans to be proud of their identity and achievements, simultaneously cautioning against complacency. He expressed optimism, stating that he believes 2025 will usher in new hopes for the region. While avoiding explicit references to pressing political matters, such as the upcoming budget negotiations which require support from parties like ERC and Comuns, Illa acknowledged the challenges facing Catalonia and urged citizens not to succumb to divisive rhetoric rooted in hatred or negativity.
’History shows us that Catalonia has thrived when it has chosen to believe in itself,’ he remarked. ‘For 2025, let us align ourselves with hope. When we nurture shared aspirations, efforts, and optimism, we advance collectively.’
Additionally, Illa expressed solidarity with the victims of recent floods in Valencia, stating, ‘I want to send a warm embrace to the citizens of Valencia who are working tirelessly to restore normalcy after the devastation caused by the floods. Catalonia will stand with you until the end.’
Through his address, President Illa reiterated that unity and fraternity are fundamental to the Catalan spirit, and he encouraged a collective move towards hope and progress.
