Ceasefire Disputes Mars Orthodox Easter as Russia and Ukraine Trade Accusations
In a troubling turn of events during the Orthodox Easter celebrations, both Russia and Ukraine have traded accusations regarding violations of a ceasefire agreement. The Ukrainian military reported on Sunday that Russian forces breached the ceasefire 2,299 times, citing drone and artillery attacks as key provocations.
In contrast, Russia accused Ukrainian troops of violating the 32-hour ceasefire that was announced by President Vladimir Putin. The ceasefire was intended to take effect on Saturday at 4:00 PM Moscow time, coinciding with the Easter festivities, and was set to last until midnight on Sunday.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had been vocal about his willingness to observe a ceasefire during this significant religious occasion. His administration declared that Ukraine would comply with the terms set forth by Russia. However, the situation escalated as Russian news agencies reported civilian injuries stemming from a Ukrainian drone attack in the Kursk region.
As the conflict continues, the hope for a peaceful resolution during this spiritually significant period seems to have been dashed, leaving both sides blaming each other for further strife.
