Celebrating Artistic Excellence: 35 Gold Medals for Merit in Fine Arts Awarded

On Tuesday, the Government awarded 35 prestigious Gold Medals for Merit in the Fine Arts, recognizing the outstanding contributions of various artists in Spain. Among the celebrated recipients were renowned singers Estrella Morente and María del Monte, the famous musical group Los Chichos, the Primavera Sound music festival, acclaimed actor Luis Tosar, and esteemed writer and philologist Irene Vallejo. The announcement was made by the government spokesperson Pilar Alegría during a press conference following the Council of Ministers. This award serves to honor individuals and organizations that have excelled in artistic and cultural creation, as well as those who have notably promoted, developed, or disseminated art and culture or preserved artistic heritage. In the music industry, prominent artists such as singer-songwriter Christina Rosenvinge, producer and DJ Óscar Mulero, and singers Karina and Estrella Morente were recognized for their invaluable contributions. The social musical entity Fundación Vozes and the renowned Primavera Sound festival also received accolades, highlighting the significant role of music in cultural landscapes. In the realms of film and theater, the awards honored notable figures like actor Luis Tosar, actress Emma Vilarasau, and director Alauda Ruiz de Azúa, recognized for her work in films including "Los domingos." The family of comedians PlaSolina, featuring actor Oriol Pla—an Emmy winner for Best International Actor for "Yo adicto"—was also among the awardees. Alauda Ruiz de Azúa has gained attention for her focus on authentic storytelling, recently premiering her film "Los domingos," which secured the Golden Shell at the San Sebastián Film Festival. The domain of performing arts saw recognition for cultural managers and choreographers such as Laura Kumin, Margaret Jova, and Marcos Morau, whose contributions further enrich Spain’s artistic community. The field of literature shone brightly with accolades going to writer Manuel Vicent, comic artist and illustrator Ana Miralles, and philologist Irene Vallejo. The Rafael Alberti bookstore received special recognition, underscoring the importance of literary spaces in cultural dynamics. In the sphere of fine arts and cultural heritage, graffiti artist and multifaceted creator Suso 33, as well as archaeologist Teresa Chapa and forensic anthropologist Francisco Etxeberria, were recognized for their work in preserving and appreciating Spain's cultural narrative. Architect and cultural manager Juan Miguel Hernández also joined this distinguished list. Other honorees included patron Antonio Gallardo Ballart, video game developer Tatiana Delgado, designer André Ricard, and the cultural entity Ateneu Popular 9 Barris. Cultural managers Daniel Giralt-Miracle, Miren Begoña Arzalluz, Manuel Jesús Borja-Villel, and José Manuel Garrido were also recognized for their significant contributions to the arts. Posthumous awards were given to noted plastic artist Roberta Marrero, journalist and cartoonist Andrés Vázquez de Sola, cultural manager José Luis Cienfuegos Marcello, and actress Verónica Echegui.
