Celebrating Italy's Cultural Heritage: Over 400,000 Visitors Join FAI's 33rd Spring Days
Over 400,000 visitors flocked to one of the 750 artistic and environmental sites across 400 areas during the 33rd edition of the Spring Days, organized by the Italian Environmental Fund (FAI) to celebrate its 50th anniversary. This event, a long-standing tradition since 1993, took place on March 22-23, despite a recent wave of adverse weather affecting several regions in Italy. Thousands of individuals explored locations typically closed to the public or lesser-known to the general populace, providing a unique opportunity to appreciate Italy’s cultural and environmental heritage.
The Spring Days represent the most significant initiative by FAI, dedicated to the restoration and preservation of Italy's rich artistic and landscape heritage. The event was made possible through the efforts of volunteers from 350 FAI Delegations and Groups, including young students who were trained to serve as guides for visitors.
Among the notable personalities attending the event was Education Minister Giuseppe Valditara, who toured Milan's magnificent Palazzo Clerici. The most frequented heritage site was the historic 13th-century Certosa di Parma, followed closely by Palazzo Clerici in Milan and the Mussolini-era Mausoleum Schilizzi in Naples. Other popular sites included the Villa Necchi Campiglio, typically open to the public, which drew significant interest.
This year’s itineraries featured stunning locations, including the contemporary Libeskind Tower in Milan and the medieval Svevo Castle in the Puglia city of Brindisi. Not to be missed were Turin's Royal Palace and Rome's Palazzo Farnese, which currently serves as the French Embassy. Additionally, Villa Rosebery in Naples, surrounded by a vast English-style garden and home to the Italian presidency since 1957, was a highlight for attendees.
The event also offered naturalistic tours showcasing Italy’s breathtaking landscapes, including the Gola del Bottaccione in Umbria and the Calanchi di Alianello in Aliano, near Matera. Visitors were treated to a journey through history, artistry, and nature, making this year's Spring Days a memorable celebration of Italy’s cultural heritage.
