Colonel Pedro Merino Castro Appointed Head of Civil Guard's Central Operational Unit
The Ministry of the Interior has announced the appointment of Colonel Pedro Merino Castro as the new head of the Central Operational Unit (UCO) of the Civil Guard. This change comes following the promotion of Rafael Yuste to general, as reported by official sources to Europa Press. Colonel Merino Castro brings a wealth of experience to the position, having previously served within the UCO and the technical unit of the Judicial Police of the Civil Guard. His extensive background also includes serving as an advisory member in the National Security Department of the Government and leading the Command of Salamanca, among other key roles.
The UCO plays a vital role in investigating significant corruption cases in Spain, notably including the high-profile Koldo case, alongside cases involving family members of the current Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. One of the recent notable investigations undertaken by the unit led to the arrest of former PSOE member Leire Díez, who is accused of orchestrating rigged public contracts. Furthermore, the UCO's diligent efforts contributed to the legal actions that resulted in the conviction of Attorney General of the State, Álvaro García Ortiz.
As Colonel Castro assumes leadership, the UCO is expected to continue its critical work in combating corruption and ensuring justice within the Spanish political landscape.
