Congress Approves Funding Package to End Government Shutdown
The US Congress has taken significant steps to resolve the budget dispute that resulted in a partial government shutdown. In a narrow vote, the House of Representatives has approved a funding package, following the Senate's prior consent. However, the shutdown can only be officially ended after President Donald Trump signs the legislation into law.
President Trump has expressed urgency regarding the resolution of the shutdown. In a message on his platform, Truth Social, he emphasized that "the country cannot endure another long shutdown," referring to the previous 43-day impasse that occurred at the end of last year. Trump has pledged to sign the funding package immediately following the vote.
The current dispute centers around the funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which oversees various controversial operations involving federal agencies and migrants. Notably, two US citizens lost their lives during DHS operations in Minneapolis this past January, reigniting debates about the agency's practices.
The approved funding package allocates temporary transitional financing for the DHS while ensuring other departments are funded through to the end of the fiscal year, aiming to stabilize government operations as discussions continue.
