Controversy Erupts as Italian Palestinian Association Leader Expelled for Condoning Violence
The recent expulsion of Mohammad Hannoun, the head of the Palestinian Association of Italy, from Milan has ignited a fierce debate over freedom of speech, antisemitism, and the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine. Hannoun was removed from Milan following his public commendation of a group of youths who allegedly attacked Maccabi Tel Aviv fans after a Europa League match in Amsterdam on November 7. The incident connected to Hannoun came to light after he praised the actions of the young assailants during a pro-Palestinian march in Milan the following Saturday. Speaking to the press, he justified the violence by saying, "I said that they did well to beat up Israeli fans because they were shouting death to Arabs and Muslims, praising the criminal Israeli army and the crimes against Gazans. They were also beating up Arab citizens of Amsterdam and tearing Palestinian flags from private homes; they were asking for it."
His controversial statements led to a public backlash, ultimately resulting in an expulsion order issued by Milan's authorities for incitement to hatred and violence.
