Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway Speaks Out Amid Epstein Revelations
Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway has finally broken her silence after weeks of speculation and controversy related to her past connections with Jeffrey Epstein. In a recent interview with NRK, she addressed the release of over 1000 documents by the United States Department of Justice that revealed the extent of her relationship with the convicted sex offender. Previously, Mette-Marit had admitted to a friendship with Epstein that lasted from 2011 to 2014, but new evidence suggests the relationship may have been closer and more complex than she initially disclosed.
In a detailed press release, she extended her apologies and mentioned that her delicate health condition—pulmonary fibrosis requiring a transplant—along with her son Marius's legal troubles contributed to her temporary silence. Mette-Marit expressed her genuine remorse for the trust she placed in Epstein, whom she stated manipulated her into a friendship she now regrets.
"I felt manipulated and deceived," she stated firmly. "For me, it is crucial to take responsibility for not having investigated his background more closely and to recognize the harm caused to the victims who endured such serious abuses. I feel immense anger because they have not received justice."
Mette-Marit met Epstein through a mutual friend, who she chose not to name, and trusted in the introductions facilitated by those she regarded highly. The revelation of numerous emails, some suggesting a close friendship, raised questions about the nature of their relationship. Mette-Marit contends, however, that their bond was purely 'friendly.'
In the interview, she also reflected on her mental state during that period, indicating that her role as Crown Princess felt overwhelming. In light of her health concerns and family challenges, she admitted, "I was very, very mistaken to trust him."
The Crown Princess recounted an uncomfortable encounter at Epstein's Palm Beach residence, which led to her deciding to cut off relations with him, highlighting it was not a sexual assault but still made her feel insecure. Haakon, the Crown Prince, who stood beside her during the interview, reiterated his unwavering support. "We’ve built a foundation together and have weathered storms as a family. That's what makes us united," he stated.
Despite previous mistakes, Mette-Marit expressed her desire to continue her role as queen consort, contingent on her health. "I hope to rebuild trust in the monarchy and support my husband in his duties if I am able to."
The political response to her interview has been mixed. While some political leaders praised her openness, others criticized her past judgment, acknowledging the significant impact this scandal has had on the monarchy’s image. Organizations that she was associated with are reevaluating their partnerships, with some distancing themselves from her position.
Mette-Marit concluded the interview by expressing sorrow for those disappointed by her past, emphasizing her intentions of transparency moving forward: "Some messages between Epstein and I do not represent the person I want to be. I apologize to everyone who has been hurt."
As the monarchy grapples with public sentiment, it remains to be seen how Mette-Marit’s candid revelations will affect not only her personal reputation but also the institution she represents.
