Dachser: CEO Burkhard Eling's Strategies for International Expansion and Decarbonization
The family-owned company Dachser has had exciting years behind it. During the corona pandemic, the logistics group was systemically relevant and earned handsomely. But the boom years are temporarily over. CEO Burkhard Eling must internationalize the business in order to compete with industry giants like Schenker or DHL. In the last 18 months alone, Dachser has acquired companies worth a billion euros, 'firmly believing that this will advance our business model,' says Eling in an interview with Handelsblatt. The acquisitions are intended to strengthen Dachser's position in the Netherlands, Sweden, and Hungary. The second major challenge is decarbonization. Eling considers the EU's requirements to move away from diesel trucks to be ambitious. Currently, only 70 out of 11,000 Dachser trucks run on electricity. 'But as always when the pressure is on, we will find solutions,' promises Eling. In addition to electric trucks, Dachser primarily needs charging points and the electricity demand of a small city. Energy providers currently don't have logistics companies properly on their radar, says the Dachser CEO.
