Daniel Agger Joins Danish National Football Team as Assistant Coach

In a significant development for Danish football, former national team captain Daniel Agger has been appointed as the new assistant coach for the Danish national football team. This announcement follows Morten Wieghorst's appointment as the temporary head coach in September. The Danish Football Union confirmed this exciting news on their official website.

Agger, who previously coached HB Køge from 2021 to 2023, expressed his enthusiasm for returning to the national team setup. 'It's great; I have missed the national team and I am really looking forward to getting started. But I haven't entered this just to be part of it. I'm here to give something to the players and make a difference. It’s about being able to contribute, and I am sure that with my experience and my skills, I have a lot to offer to the team,' Agger commented.

This new role for Agger coincides with Wieghorst's initial contract, which lasts until the end of autumn, during which Denmark will compete in six Nations League matches. Wieghorst and Agger share a history as former teammates at Brøndby, adding a personal connection to their professional collaboration. Wieghorst eagerly welcomed Agger to the team, highlighting his wealth of experience and passion for the national team. 'It’s fantastic to have a talent like Agger in the team. He is passionate about the national team and eager to come in and work with the players. I am extremely excited about it. Everyone knows his great passion and energy, and at the same time, he has extensive knowledge of the game with both coaching experience and experience from a significant national career, which he can share with the players and the team.'

Daniel Agger enjoyed a notable international career, making 75 appearances for Denmark before his retirement in 2016. He is well-remembered for his time at clubs like Brøndby and Liverpool, where he was acclaimed for his abilities as a strong left-footed center-back. After stepping away from regular football activities, Agger surprised many by taking on the head coach position at HB Køge in the summer of 2021. He spent two fruitful years there, further honing his coaching skills.

As Agger joins the national setup, another notable figure in Danish football, Christian Poulsen, will be stepping down as assistant coach after three years under head coach Kasper Hjulmand. In light of this change, set-piece coach Lars Knudsen is expected to take on a more significant role within the coaching team starting in the autumn.

This shift in the coaching staff represents an exciting new chapter for the Danish national team as they work towards upcoming competitions, and Agger's extensive experience both on and off the pitch could prove invaluable in shaping the team's future.
