Danish Prime Minister Asserts Greenland’s Inviolability Amid Trump’s Controversial Claims
On Wednesday, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen made a strong declaration in response to comments made by US President Donald Trump regarding Greenland. During her arrival from the NATO summit in Ankara, she firmly stated, "Greenland is not for sale," reaffirming Denmark's commitment to defend its territory against foreign claims.
The tension arose after President Trump reiterated his belief that Greenland, which is an autonomous territory of Denmark, should be under US control. "Yesterday, I heard the President of the United States, and I think the US position is unfortunately very clear on this issue," Frederiksen remarked. She emphasized that Denmark expects all allied nations to respect the rights of Greenlandic people to self-determination and to recognize Denmark as a sovereign state with territorial integrity.
Frederiksen highlighted that Denmark is prepared to defend its NATO territory vigorously, citing a cornerstone responsibility of the Atlantic Alliance: mutual defense among member nations. This declaration comes in the face of President Trump’s assertions that Greenland's lack of support for Denmark undermines NATO relationships. Trump stated that Greenland should indeed be under US control and criticized Denmark for allegedly failing to adequately protect the Arctic territory, stating, "It should be under US control."
This ongoing debate comes as tensions increase due to geopolitical dynamics in the Arctic region, where both China and Russia are increasing their naval presence. Trump expressed his concerns about European allies not recognizing the strategic importance of this territory, suggesting that the US provides significant military support to Europe, which he believes has not been reciprocated adequately.
As the NATO summit unfolds, member nations are grappling with various issues, including the joint statement expected from the 32 allies today, which reflects differing opinions among them. The ongoing complexities of US-European relations regarding defense spending and the emphasis on the strategic significance of territories like Greenland will likely remain a point of contention moving forward.
