Danish Prime Minister Calls for European Support for Ukraine at NATO Summit
During a Council of Foreign Relations conference in Washington, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen expressed the need for Europe to step up and provide more military support to Ukraine in the face of Russia's aggression. Frederiksen criticized the slow pace at which Europe has responded to the crisis, emphasizing the importance of speeding up assistance to Ukraine. She highlighted the necessity of providing air defense systems to Ukraine, particularly in light of Russia's persistent missile and drone attacks.
The recent Russian bombing campaign in Ukraine, which resulted in the death of at least 41 people, underscored the urgency of the situation. As the NATO summit took place, allies were expected to announce new military aid for Ukraine, including air defense systems and F16 fighter jets. Denmark, for instance, announced its decision to transfer some of its F16s to Ukraine to bolster its defense capabilities.
Despite concerns about Russian escalation, Frederiksen urged NATO and European allies to prioritize Ukraine's security needs without imposing unnecessary restrictions. She warned against underestimating Russia's imperial ambitions and stressed the importance of boosting defense spending among European nations to counter such threats.
Frederiksen also highlighted Russia's efforts to destabilize regions beyond Ukraine, pointing to its hybrid activities in Western Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and the Balkans. She emphasized the need for a unified and decisive response to Russia's aggression and expressed hope for continued U.S. leadership within NATO.
As the security landscape in Europe remains precarious, the call for greater unity and support for Ukraine from European nations resonates as a critical step towards deterring Russian aggression and upholding stability in the region.
