David Sánchez, Brother of Government President, Faces Nine-Year Disqualification Over Administrative Malfeasance
Musician David Sánchez, who is the brother of the President of the Government, has been sentenced by the Provincial Court of Badajoz to nine years of disqualification for administrative malfeasance related to his hiring by the Badajoz Provincial Council. This sentence has sparked immediate political reactions, most notably from Minister of Transport Óscar Puente, who released a statement on his official X account shortly after the decision was made public. Puente highlighted that this period of governance will be examined in future history books, pointing out the strain on essential institutions. He attributed this tension to an effort to undermine the government, indicating that political rivals are resorting to judicial channels due to their inability to succeed in elections.
Additional responses came from the PSOE ranks, where María Jesús Montero, the Deputy Secretary General of the federal PSOE and Secretary General of the PSOE of Andalusia, expressed her belief that Sánchez deserves an immediate acquittal. Montero argued that the sentence was inconsistent with both the trial's proceedings and the lack of evidence presented against him.
Government spokesperson Elma Saiz addressed the issue further during a press conference following the Council of Ministers meeting, emphasizing that the case originated from a complaint filed by an ultraright organization and claimed that the prosecution had dismantled all accusations against Sánchez. Saiz reaffirmed the government’s confidence in the judicial system and expressed hope that David Sánchez would be vindicated in higher courts.
In a pointed response to the situation, Gabriel Rufián criticized the judgment and underscored the need for reforms within the judiciary to ensure justice is served without political influence. This case highlights the ongoing tensions within Spanish politics, where judicial decisions intersect with political rivalries.
