Death of Iraqi Refugee and Anti-Islam Activist Sparks Concerns of Foreign Influence in Sweden
Five individuals have been apprehended following the tragic shooting of Salwan Momika, an Iraqi refugee and well-known anti-Islam activist, in Sweden. This incident occurred merely hours ahead of a pending court verdict regarding his controversial actions involving the burning of the Quran, according to local police reports.
Momika, aged 38, was reportedly shot late on Wednesday night in a residence in Södertälje, a town situated near Stockholm. This case has drawn heightened attention not only in Sweden but also internationally, as Momika gained notoriety earlier in the year after burning copies of the Quran during public demonstrations—an act that incited outrage among many people across the globe.
In the wake of the shooting, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson expressed concerns that this violent act might be connected to a foreign power. "I can assure you that the security services are deeply involved because there is obviously a risk that there is a connection to a foreign power," he stated during a press conference.
The Swedish security service confirmed that while police are leading the investigation, they are closely monitoring the situation for any implications it may have on national security. In a related court case, a Stockholm court was scheduled to announce the verdict against Momika and another individual on Thursday for offenses related to inciting hatred against an ethnic or national group. The other defendant involved in the case shared a cryptic message on social media platform X, expressing fear for his own safety by saying, "I’m next."
At the time of the shooting, reports suggest that Momika was livestreaming on TikTok. A video obtained by Reuters captured the moment when police interrupted the livestream and confiscated Momika’s phone, indicating the chaotic atmosphere surrounding the tragic event.
The Swedish government has heightened its alert status for potential terrorism threats, particularly those stemming from the growing backlash associated with Quran burnings. Many of these burnings, mainly conducted by Momika, have provoked outrage and led to threats against Swedish citizens, both domestically and abroad.
In a measure of the sensitivities surrounding this issue, Sweden’s migration agency had previously attempted to deport Momika on grounds of providing false information during his residency application. However, this effort was halted due to concerns that he might face torture or inhumane treatment if returned to Iraq.
