Democratic Party in Turmoil: Calls for Potential Candidate Change After Biden's TV Debate Against Trump
The appearance of US President Joe Biden in the TV debate against Donald Trump has sparked great concerns among many supporters of the Democratic Party. Specifically, no one wants to comment to the major US media outlets but the tone of the numerous reports is clear. 'Game over,' says a longtime Democratic campaign adviser to CNBC. Democratic representatives are also upset, as reported by the Financial Times. Many Democrats from all parts of the party exchanged private messages during the debate, quoting one representative, 'We need a new candidate.' But is that even possible at this late stage? Only Biden himself can decide to withdraw. 'There is no Plan B,' explains Democratic strategist Elie Jacobs to Handelsblatt. Biden and Trump have gone through the democratic process of primaries. If Biden's own party undermines their candidate against his will now, the Democrats might as well pack up. 'That would be a disaster.' It is certain that only health issues or the realization that he needs a successor could revoke Biden's candidacy. However, a change of candidate is more difficult than it sounds. When President Biden decided in the spring of 2023 to run for reelection, he deprived the party of the possibility to build up a potential successor.
