Devastating Earthquake in Myanmar: Casualty Figures Rise as Rescue Operations Intensify
Two days have passed since a magnitude 7.7 earthquake devastated Myanmar, leaving the death toll in confusion and sorrow. As per a statement from the military junta, reported by various media outlets including El País, confirmed fatalities have reached at least 1,700, with around 3,400 individuals injured and 300 still unaccounted for. Rescue operations continue, but estimates from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) suggest the death toll could surpass 10,000.
The tremor was not only felt in Myanmar but also in neighboring Thailand, Laos, as well as more distant territories including Vietnam, Bangladesh, and southwestern China. On Sunday, the Burmese town of Mandalay experienced a 5.1 magnitude aftershock, the latest in a series of seismic events following Friday's earthquake. The USGS identified the epicenter of this aftershock as being located 28 kilometers northwest of Mandalay, at a depth of 10 kilometers. Luckily, there have been no immediate reports of casualties or damages resulting from this aftershock.
In response to the tragedy, the Thai government has dispatched a rescue team comprised of 49 personnel to aid in finding survivors within Myanmar. Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has directed Defense Minister Phumtham Wechayachai to mobilize military resources for this urgent cause. This contingent departed on Sunday, equipped with medical support and carrying essential supplies loaded onboard a C130 military aircraft.
Additional international support is arriving swiftly, with rescue teams from Russia, China, Singapore, and India having arrived in Myanmar by Saturday. Other nations have also pledged to send specialists and relief aid as the situation stabilizes.
As the aftershocks continue and rescue efforts unfold, the determination of nations around the region showcases a commendable spirit of solidarity in the face of this humanitarian crisis.
