Devastating Forest Fire in Aude, France Claims Life and Evacuates Campsites

A large forest fire erupted on Tuesday afternoon in Aude, a department located in the southwest of France, between the cities of Narbonne and Carcassonne. The blaze originated in the small municipality of Ribaute and quickly expanded overnight, engulfing an area of 110 square kilometers of forests and scrubland. Tragically, the prefecture of Aude reported that a woman perished in her home due to the fire in Saint-Laurent-de-la-Cabrerisse, which is situated not far from Ribaute. In addition to the fatality, nine other individuals have sustained injuries, with one person in critical condition and a tenth individual currently reported missing. In response to the rapidly spreading flames, authorities have evacuated two campsites and advised residents to remain indoors unless directed otherwise by firefighting services. Unfortunately, the fire has impacted approximately 25 homes and caused power outages affecting about 2,500 residents in the area. The fire's rapid advancement has been attributed to several unfavorable weather conditions, including an extended period of drought that has left vegetation extremely dry, coupled with strong winds that have further exacerbated the situation. As a necessary precaution, both highways A9 and A61 have been closed; the A9 is a significant route that connects France and Spain and is crucial for regional transport. At present, firefighters are focused on battling the flames in the small town of Roquefort-des-Corbières, where the fire approached just before dawn on Wednesday.
