Devastating Wildfires Force Mass Evacuations in Southeastern Crete
Thousands of tourists are evacuating from southeastern Crete as a catastrophic wildfire sweeps through the region of Lasithi. This alarming situation has prompted local authorities to issue evacuations from hotels and homes, with over 1,000 residents and visitors relocated to a temporary shelter at an indoor stadium in Ierapetra since Wednesday. As the situation escalated, many holidaymakers decided to leave the island by boat, leading to estimates of around 5,000 tourists departing the area, raising serious concerns regarding the future of travel bookings in this popular destination.
The wildfire erupted on Tuesday close to Ierapetra, engulfing vast areas of forests and olive groves. The devastating flames have been fueled by strong winds and dry conditions, creating hazardous circumstances for both residents and firefighting efforts. Wind gusts reaching up to 9 on the Beaufort scale have exacerbated the situation, causing flare-ups that have hindered the work of emergency services.
According to Fire Service spokesman Vassilis Vathrakogiannis, firefighters are facing a challenging battle as they combat multiple resurgent blazes, alongside reinforcements dispatched from Athens. Some homes have sustained damage in the fire, and a number of individuals have been treated for respiratory problems due to the smoke and toxic air.
As Crete grapples with this environmental crisis, the lasting impacts on tourism and the local economy are becoming increasingly evident, highlighting the urgent need for effective firefighting strategies and preventive measures to protect both the island's inhabitants and its vital tourism sector.
