Dominique Pelicot Accepts 20-Year Sentence Without Appeal, Focuses on Closure for Ex-Wife
Dominique Pelicot, sentenced to 20 years in prison for sedating his wife for a decade to facilitate the sexual assaults by multiple men, has decided not to appeal his sentence. This choice comes amid growing media attention regarding his case and others connected to a disturbing network of abuse. His lawyer, Béatrice Zavarro, communicated this decision, explaining that Pelicot believes an appeal process would only cause his ex-wife, Gisèle Pelicot, further emotional turmoil.
In a statement to Franceinfo, Zavarro expressed Pelicot's desire to 'turn the page' on this chapter of his life, emphasizing that he does not see Gisèle as an opponent in this situation. The decision against appealing is rooted in a wish to protect his ex-wife from further confrontations and stress, acknowledging the already extensive suffering she has endured.
Pelicot, now 72 years old, has been identified as the orchestrator of an abuse operation which has brought 51 men to trial. The sentencing for these men occurred on December 19, 2023, resulting in prison terms that range from three to twenty years. While Pelicot has chosen not to pursue an appeal, numerous other defendants in this extensive case have already filed to contest their sentences, and more than fifteen have appealed so far.
Gisèle Pelicot has stood resolutely throughout the legal proceedings, choosing to make all hearings public to raise awareness and potentially aid other victims of similar abuses.
