Eindhoven Airport Temporarily Closed Due to Unidentified Drones in Airspace

Eindhoven Airport, the second busiest airport in the Netherlands, was temporarily shut down following sightings of unidentified drones in the surrounding airspace. Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans confirmed that both police and military forces have been mobilized as part of an ongoing investigation into the drone activity. The airport's antidrone defense systems are on standby, ready to intervene if necessary. As a precautionary measure, numerous incoming flights have been redirected to other nearby airports, including Rotterdam The Hague and Brussels. Located in the southern part of the Netherlands near the Belgian border, Eindhoven Airport serves both commercial and military aviation purposes. The drone activity is not isolated, as similar incidents have been reported across Europe in recent months, with drones spotted near military bases or airports in cities such as Munich, Oslo, Copenhagen, and Aalborg in Denmark. Additionally, earlier this month, both Brussels-Zaventem Airport, Belgium's main airport, and Liège Airport experienced temporary closures due to sightings of unidentified drones. On Friday evening, further drone sightings occurred over the Volkel airbase, located approximately 40 kilometers northeast of Eindhoven. It remains uncertain where these drones originated from and whether there is any connection between the separate incidents. Authorities continue to stress the importance of aviation safety, and measures are being taken to ensure that airspace remains secure. As the investigation unfolds, more information may shed light on the ongoing concerns surrounding unidentified drones near critical infrastructures. Related Sources: • Source 1 • Source 2
