Elon Musk's Controversial Influence on Germany's Election Campaign Sparks Outrage

The German government has raised alarms over Elon Musk's attempts to meddle in the country's upcoming election campaign, particularly through his endorsements of the far-right party, Alternative für Deutschland (AfD). Government spokesperson Christiane Hoffmann expressed concerns during a media briefing, asserting that Musk's recent social media activity and an opinion piece he published were clear efforts to sway the federal election. "It is indeed the case that Elon Musk is trying to influence the federal election," she stated, albeit acknowledging his right to free speech. "After all, freedom of opinion also covers the greatest nonsense."

Musk, who has been vocal in his critiques of German politics, even took to social media last month to label Chancellor Olaf Scholz a fool. His calls for German voters to support the AfD—deemed a suspected extremist party by federal authorities—have ignited outrage and accusations of alarming interference in what is considered Europe's powerhouse economy.

Earlier this month, the South African-born entrepreneur boldly claimed, "Only the AfD can save Germany," in an X post where he also promoted a video by right-wing influencer Naomi Seibt. That video criticized Friedrich Merz, the conservative frontrunner in the electoral race, while praising Argentina's libertarian president, Javier Milei. Following this, Musk published a guest editorial in the prominent daily, Welt am Sonntag, warning that Germany was on the edge of economic and cultural collapse. In this piece, he defended the AfD against allegations of radicalism and commended its policies on regulation and taxes.

The backlash against Musk's interference was swift and widespread. Eva Marie Kogel, editor of the opinion section at Welt am Sonntag, resigned in protest of the publication's decision to feature Musk's article. Political figures from across the spectrum condemned his intrusion into German democracy. Health Minister Karl Lauterbach expressed that Musk's overt involvement was "undignified and highly problematic." Merz further criticized Musk’s actions as intrusive and presumptuous, claiming, "I cannot recall in the history of western democracies a comparable case of interference in the election campaign of a friendly country."

The urgency of the elections has been amplified by the recent collapse of Scholz's center-left coalition, prompting him to call for a confidence vote to bring forth a general election on February 23, seven months earlier than scheduled. With voters increasingly dissatisfied due to the rising cost of living and stagnant economic growth, the Social Democratic Party (SPD) is expected to face a tough battle against Merz's CDU/CSU bloc.

In a formal address announcing the election's timing, Germany's President Frank-Walter Steinmeier subtly criticized Musk's influence, cautioning against external attempts to sway the electorate. His comments were perceived as a direct rebuke to Musk, emphasizing the need for integrity within Germany's electoral process.

Members of the AfD have actively sought connections with the Trump camp, showcasing a mutual admiration that raises concerns about ideological alignment across borders. Alice Weidel, the party's co-leader, was among the first foreign politicians to celebrate Trump's election victory, and some AfD activists were photographed with Trump during a visit to his Mar-a-Lago club on U.S. election day. They were seen chanting slogans in both English and German, signaling a calculated effort to gain favor with right-wing populists globally.

In his op-ed, Musk referenced Weidel’s same-sex partner from Sri Lanka to challenge the notion that the AfD is a right-wing extremist party. "Does that sound like Hitler to you? Please," Musk argued. Currently, the AfD is polling at approximately 19%, closely trailing behind the CDU/CSU at 31%. This strong showing has the potential to complicate coalition-building efforts following the elections, as mainstream parties have firmly ruled out any partnership with the AfD, either at the state or federal level.

Musk's interference in Germany’s political realm not only raises issues of sovereignty and political integrity but also reflects a broader narrative of influential figures using their platforms to impact democratic processes worldwide.
